I started out as a pen maker in Manitoba, Canada. I loved beautifully made fountain pens, especially the Japanese urushi pens and the culture that created them, so I started to make my own. I soon realized that to create these new works of art I would have to learn a whole new set of skills. After graduating with a goldsmith’s degree in Ontario and living in Japan for a short time, I am now proud to introduce the Shimizu brand.
Shimizu (pronounced She - me - zoo) is my wife's maiden name. I've also named two of the brand’s lines after my wife and our daughter. The “Aya” line is more intricate with large luscious gemstones and many diamonds, where the simpler but elegant designs are in our “Noa” line.
I'm inspired by Japan, by it's people, their diligence and perseverance and by it's rich history and art. You'll see hints of Japanese culture throughout all of my work.
